The Mac Pro 5,1 is the most upgradeable machine OCLP supports. The single most important change is a Metal-capable GPU — the stock cards are non-Metal, and swapping one in moves you from legacy graphics patches to full native acceleration.
Two prerequisites before you begin: the firmware must be current, and a 2009 MacPro4,1 must be flashed to 5,1 firmware first.
Sort the firmware out first
Two firmware matters come before any OCLP work, and getting them out of the way prevents a lot of confusing failures later:
- 2009 MacPro4,1 owners: your machine must be flashed to MacPro5,1 firmware. It's a well-documented, widely performed procedure that unlocks faster processors and a much higher macOS ceiling. Follow Dortania's instructions rather than a random forum post.
- Everyone: make sure the boot ROM is up to date. An outdated boot ROM causes boot problems that look like OpenCore faults and aren't.

The upgrades that make it a real machine
A Metal-capable GPU.
The upgrade that changes everything. It moves the machine off legacy graphics patches entirely and onto full native acceleration. Check current OCLP and Dortania documentation for supported cards, and note that some need a supplementary power connection the Mac Pro doesn't natively provide — plan the power cabling as part of the purchase.
An NVMe SSD on a PCIe adapter.
Far faster than the SATA sleds, and OpenCore provides the boot support the Mac's own firmware lacks. A cheap passive adapter card plus a standard NVMe drive is all it takes.
A PCIe USB 3 card.
USB 2.0 is the machine's most irritating limitation in daily use. Inexpensive to fix and immediately noticeable.
A modern wireless card, if you need Wi-Fi.
Many of these shipped without wireless, or with a legacy card whose driver is long gone. A supported PCIe or internal card ends the problem permanently. Ethernet is of course simplest of all on a desktop.
More RAM and, if you like, more cores.
Registered ECC DDR3 is cheap now. On dual-socket boards the processors are replaceable too — an unusual thing to be able to say about any Mac.
What it costs to run
Worth being clear-eyed about: this is a large, heavy, power-hungry workstation designed in 2010. Idle draw is far above any modern machine, and under load with a discrete GPU it is substantially more. If electricity is expensive where you are, that running cost can outweigh the hardware being cheap.
It's also loud under sustained load, and it takes up real desk or floor space. None of that is a reason not to use one — just know what you're signing up for before buying a tower on the strength of the upgrade list.

Is the 2012 model better than the 2010?
They're the same machine with different stock processor options — both are MacPro5,1 and both patch identically. Buy on condition, configuration and price rather than year.
Do I need a Mac-flashed GPU?
A flashed card gives you boot screens, which is convenient. With OpenCore handling the boot process, an unflashed PC card is workable for many people — you simply don't see the early boot output. Weigh convenience against the price difference.
Can it run Sequoia?
Sonoma is the practical ceiling for this hardware — see the supported Macs list. Given how much life the upgrade path gives it, that's a reasonable place to stop.
